CBI
On behalf of CBI’s Integrated programme for the tourism sector in Africa, and in support of the Export Coaching Programme (ECP) a 3-day training programme was set-up for Kenyan tour operators and Business Support Organisations at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi, from 3rd to 5th June 2015.

The Ask
How can we unlock the generative potential of Kenya’s tourism sector to cultivate a mindset of innovation and inspire fresh perspectives on the industry’s most pressing challenges?

The Fieldwork
We designed a three days workshop format for ECP’s and BSO’s, since a workshop creates an intensive educational experience in a short period of time. The workshop serie was geared at uncovering the generative capacities of the different organisations. The workshops were participatory in nature and designed to start a critical dialogue among the participants, while using the co-creative mode.
The design of the three days was flexible. We used an emergent approach, meaning that the results from one part of the programming was leading c.q. input for the next step in the process.
The workshops were embedded in a process of ‘Inspiration-Ideation-Implementation’. In the inspiration phase the focus was on grafting a generative dialogue between the participants. The ideation phase focused on exploring the unknown to create new knowledge and new possibilities. The implementation phase was beyond the scope of these workshops, since implementation can vary from weeks to months.

The Deliverables
Acknowledging that the programme was challenging for the three days, the eagerness of the participants showed through their readiness to step out of their comfort zone and engage in new thinking. All lot of knowledge was transferred, the participants gained new perspectives, learned to use new tools, the value of collaboration was made apparent, and the first steps towards collaboration amongst ECPs and BSOs were made resulting in tangible business ideas.
